Google Campus Master Plan / Moffett Park Specific Plan
Google and Lendlease created the Google Development Venture (GDV) team to redevelop multiple Google campuses in the San Francisco Bay Area. Included in this effort was Google’s 350-acre Sunnyvale, California, campus. The goal was to turn this traditional suburban office park into a vibrant, mixed-use community with approximately 6 million square feet of class A office, 12,500 residential units (with a 20% affordable set aside), 500,000 square feet of retail, and 50 acres of open space. This campus sits within the larger 1,200-acre Moffett Park business district, which was simultaneously undergoing a redevelopment planning effort, the Moffett Park Specific Plan (MPSP) update, managed by the City of Sunnyvale.
Google needed significant amounts of new office space to accommodate record growth prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there was also an understanding that employees wanted to be in a dynamic and vibrant environment, beyond the walls of their offices. The GDV team worked to bring together these two goals in a visionary plan, and to ensure that this plan could be executed consistent with the City’s goals for Moffett Park. The GDV team met frequently with City staff and consultants in numerous workshops and study sessions, as well as provided comments on draft versions of the plan.
